5 Reasons People May
Be Afraid Of Driving
Phobias are something that are a part of everyone. Some fear spiders while others have a fear of heights. Something that is fairly common but often overlooked is the fear of driving. People develop a fear of driving for a number of different reasons and it can be fairly difficult to break. Here are five reasons you or a friend may be afraid of driving.
1. Have been in a car accident
One of the top reasons people are afraid of driving is because they have been in a car accident at some point in their life. Whether it was a simple bumper to bumper that caused whiplash or a serious accident that put you in the hospital, it can be a frightening experience. This is certainly an occurrence that can have an affect on you starting to drive. If this is the case, consider talking to a counselor about your feeling
2. Something new
Whenever we try new things out in life, it can be a bit nerve-racking. The key is trying to familiarize yourself with driving as frequently as possible. If you have a fear of driving over bridges, try to find bridges to drive over. If you have a fear of driving on highways, go out of your way to drive on highways. Go at your own pace, but facing your fears will help eliminate the problem.
3. Failed driving course multiple times
It is an exciting time for most to get their license. However, it can be embarrassing, discouraging, and actually lead to fear of driving if you end up failing the driver’s test multiple times. If this is the case, it is important you remain positive and confident in your abilities. Tell yourself the next time you take the test will be the time you pass.
4. Started late in life
In addition to failing the driver’s course multiple times, simply starting out late in life can lead to fear. Typically, people get the driver’s license somewhere between 16 and 18. You may feel behind if you wait until you are in your mid to late 20’s. The key is finding support from a friend or family member to help you through the process of learning how to drive.
5. Fear of the unknown
The last reason you may be afraid of driving is due to the fear of the unknown. You have no control over a bridge collapsing, the road being icy, or someone else running into you. However, driving is just another piece of life that is unknown. Keep in mind that life in general is unknown as you never know when something tragic may end your life or something tremendous may change your life for the better. All you can do is keep moving forward and jump on the road today.
