5 Tips To Help You Reduce
Panic While Driving

It can be quite frightening having a panic attack and not knowing what to do. What is even worse is experiencing panic while driving. Not only is it a terrifying experience, but it can be rather dangerous as well. For this reason, here are five tips to help you reduce panic while you are in the car.

1. Listen to soothing music

The problem with panic attacks and anxiety is your mind beings thinking of the worst possible scenario that could happen. Instead of thinking logically, it immediately begins thinking negatively. By listening to soothing music, you can calm yourself down and begin to think rationally again.

2. Go with a friend

When first trying to reduce the panic you are experiencing, having a friend with you in the car can be extremely beneficial. It allows you to interact and talk with someone while keeping your mind off of the irrational thoughts that typically float through your mind. In addition, your friend can offer you support and help to calm you down if you do begin to get anxious.

3. Create a positive statement to repeat over and over

The next thing you can do is create a positive statement that you can repeat to yourself over and over the second you begin to feel anxious. Remember, panic develops because you are unsure of things and are worrying about something that there is no need to worry about. Say to yourself things like “millions of people drive safely every day” or “driving the speed limit will eliminate the chance of a high-speed car accident.”

4. Automatic thought

As scary as it is to say, your mind can and will think on its own without you having control over it at times. For this reason, you need to learn how to discover your automatic thought so you can have better control over it. It is these automatic thoughts that create the negativity that lead to the fear of driving on highways or crashing. If you can manipulate these thoughts or channel them into positive thinking, you can put an end to your panic while driving.

5. What causes your fear?

The number one thing you must do in order to get rid of panic while driving is to determine exactly what is causing the fear and then write it down. Was there a specific incident that caused this feeling or did it build up over time by observing numerous car crashes on the road or on the TV? Knowing what is causing these feelings will help you find the best way to treat your problem so you can drive on the road freely again.
