Conquer Fear Of Driving By Taking It Slow

For some, reaching the age of 16 is a tremendous feeling as it is the age you can attain your driver’s license. For others, it is nothing more than a time to panic because of the fear of stepping foot behind the pedal. The key to conquer fear of driving is to take the learning process slow.

There are a number of reasons why teens try to rush through the learning process of driving. There is the desire of wanting to drive on your own, being able to go places whenever you want without your parents, and the fear that you will get made fun of if you do not get your driver’s license by the age of 16.

However, it is important you understand everyone learns at a different pace. Much like science class or history, you are going to excel at a different rate than your friends. It is important you take it slow and go at a rate that is comfortable for you.

You may be wondering what “take it slow” even means. First off, this means blocking out what anyone else has to say and listening solely on your own thoughts. The only person you need to be listening to is yourself. Who cares if your friends are driving across town or on the highway. Do what is comfortable for you.

Next, start small and work your way up at a steady pace. Start in a parking lot that has no cars and practice driving around in circles or simply going straight. Continue to drive in this parking lot until you feel comfortable to move next to the curb of the parking lot. This will help you practice driving steadily with something next to you.

As soon as you are ready to move out of the parking lot, you can then jump onto the local street and drive next to other cars. This is a way to move up without having to feel the pressure or stress of driving on the highway. The last step would be to move on to the fear of driving on highways.

In order to conquer fear of driving, grab a buddy or family member and bring them along for emotional support. Having someone with you that believes you can do it and has your back will help calm the nerves and eliminate a lot of the stress. What you will to come realize is a great amount of your fear as built up from thoughts going through your head. If you can eliminate these thoughts and focus on driving, you will have no problem conquering the fear of driving.
