Everyone in life gets nervous, anxious, or scared of something. It is natural to have these kinds of feelings toward something whether it is being scared of heights, spiders, or being alone. For some, the thought of getting behind the wheel and driving stirs up emotions and creates anxious and nerve-racking feelings. The key is understanding how scared of driving you are.
As with all emotions, there are varying degrees of being scared of driving. Knowing how you feel and what kind of symptoms you experience when getting on the road can help determine the best way to get over your phobia. With that said, here are some of the degrees of being scared.
At the lowest end of the totem pole is simply having an uneasy stomach when first starting out. It is natural to be nervous when you are first learning to drive being that it is a new experience and is something you have never done before. To handle this type of emotion, all you need to do is practice, practice, and practice some more. The more familiar you become with driving the easier it will become.
The next degree of being scared is feeling anxious because of other kinds of phobias. Some may have a fear of driving over a bridge because they may be scared of heights. Others may fear driving in an unknown area because of the fear of getting lost. As with the first level, you can counteract this by driving a little further out of your comfort zone each day to expand this level. If that does not work, you can simply find alternate routes to take in order to avoid these areas.
The last degree consists of you going through some kind of tragic incident that may have formed your perception of driving. If you were in a serious car accident as a child or you lost a parent because they were in an accident, it is more than understandable to be scared of driving. If this is the case, you may have to seek counseling and ease your way into driving by starting on the block or in a parking lot.
There are several symptoms you may experience depending on how scared and anxious you are of driving. Some of the symptoms you may encounter include heart palpitations, chest pains, dizziness, heavy breathing, intense sweating, fuzzy vision, and feeling sick. All of these symptoms can be contributed to being scared of driving.
